Mauritius Records Growth in Domestic Exports Despite Overall Decline in External Trade

Article | June 02, 2026

The latest external trade statistics released by Statistics Mauritius for the first quarter of 2026 reveal a mixed performance for Mauritius' external trade sector, with domestic exports demonstrating resilience despite an overall decline in total exports.

According to the data, total exports—which comprise domestic exports, re-exports, and exports of ship's stores and bunkers—declined by 4.1% compared to the corresponding quarter of 2025. The decrease was primarily driven by lower exports of ship's stores and bunkers, as well as a significant contraction in re-export activities.

Encouragingly, domestic exports grew by 4.1% during the first quarter of 2026, reflecting the continued strength and adaptability of Mauritian producers in international markets. Export Oriented Enterprises (EOEs) also recorded a modest increase of 0.5% over the same period.

While textile exports faced challenging conditions and registered a decline, growth in several non-textile sectors helped support overall domestic export performance. Key contributors included live primates, medical devices, cane sugar, and jewellery, highlighting the increasing diversification of Mauritius' export base.

The report also indicates an improvement in the country's balance of visible trade, with the trade deficit narrowing by 2.9% to reach Rs 45.6 billion during the first quarter of 2026.

Looking ahead, Statistics Mauritius forecasts total exports for 2026 at approximately Rs 105 billion, representing a decrease of 2.8% compared to 2025. Total imports are projected to reach Rs 320 billion, up by 1.6%, while the trade deficit is expected to widen to around Rs 215 billion for the year.

The latest figures underscore both the challenges facing global trade and the importance of continued efforts to strengthen the competitiveness and diversification of Mauritius' export sector. As the voice of exporters, MEXA will continue to monitor trade developments closely and advocate for policies that support sustainable export growth and market expansion.
