U.S. Congress Approves One-Year Renewal of AGOA

Article | February 04, 2026

The U.S. Congress has approved a one-year renewal of AGOA as part of a modified federal funding package.

The legislation provides for the extension of AGOA for one year, retroactive to 30 September 2025. The current approval ensures continuity of the programme and prevents disruption to trade flows.

The renewal is of critical importance to Mauritian exporters as AGOA continues to:

  • Maintain duty-free access to the U.S. market for eligible products
  • Preserve the competitiveness of Mauritian exports
  • Safeguard existing export orders and long-term buyer relationships
  • Support employment across key export-oriented sectors

Looking Ahead

While this one-year extension is welcomed, it remains a short-term solution.

MEXA has now started engaging with the Government and discussions regarding a potential Bilateral Trade Agreement between Mauritius and the United States are expected to continue. MEXA will remain actively engaged and will closely monitor developments to ensure that the interests of Mauritian exporters are effectively represented.
